The healthcare needs of an aging population will disproportionately affect ophthalmology, according to an analysis of needs for geriatric ophthalmology.

Andrew G. Lee and Anne L. Coleman reported on a research agenda-setting process in development by the American Geriatrics Society and the John A. Hartford Foundation. The authors performed a systemic literature search covering the years 1990 to 2000.

A literature review of 168 papers was conducted, and a needs assessment for each of the identified topics was performed. Gaps in the existing knowledge base were identified and key questions for future research were proposed.

The complete analysis is published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society.
