A gene that may be a cause of vascular diseases of the retina has been identified by a group of British researchers.

Carmel Toomes and colleagues at Leeds University said in a press release that their work could lead to early diagnosis of diseases affecting the light-sensitive part of the eye. Dr. Toomes’ group “is studying rare inherited forms of retinal disease in order to understand the more common forms of blindness affected by the growth of abnormal blood vessels in diabetic retinopathy and age-related macular dystrophy,” according to the press release.

Their work, involving analysis of genes in families affected by familial exudative vitreoretinopathy, is published in the American Journal of Human Genetics.
