ROME — The fourth-generation accommodating Crystalens HD500 from Bausch & Lomb, with enhanced optic capabilities for increased depth of focus, performs well at all distances, according to several surgeons speaking here.

"Of all lenses for presbyopia, this is the one that gives the best distance vision, and no other lens can compete at intermediate. About 80% of the patients achieve 20/20, and 100% achieve 20/40. At near, almost 100% can read J3 or better uncorrected," Richard L. Lindstrom, MD, said at the annual joint meeting of Ocular Surgery News and the Italian Society of Ophthalmology.

According to James Davies, MD, keys to success are patient selection and a good implantation technique. He recommended a well-centered anterior capsulotomy, a meticulous cleanup of the cortex, polishing of the anterior and posterior capsules, and a final rotation of the lens to ensure proper positioning in the equator of the capsular bag.

Making sure that the incision is watertight at the end of the procedure is also crucial, Dr. Davies said.
