Fixed combinations used mainly as second or third choice for glaucoma therapy in Europe
Eur J Ophthalmol. 2009;19(4):588-593.
Only 30% of European physicians polled used fixed combinations as their first choice for glaucoma therapy, a survey found.
The study authors sent 530 multiple-choice surveys to randomly chosen ophthalmologists in the European Union and neighboring countries. They received 50 survey responses from 16 countries.
Results showed that 80% of European ophthalmologists used fixed combinations as their second choice of medical therapy, while 64% used it as their third choice. However, 98% of those polled thought fixed combination therapy could enhance glaucoma therapy by promoting improved compliance and quality of life.
"[Fixed combinations] in the European Union are a potentially popular method to reduce intraocular pressure, being prescribed most commonly as second or third choice therapy. The perceived advantages to [fixed combination] therapy are greater adherence to the medicine and improved patient quality of life," the authors said.
