SAN DIEGO—ASCRS inducted five new memebers into the Ophthalmology Hall of Fame, in ceremonies here Sunday evening.

Among the new inductees was Svyatoslav Fyodorov, MD, one of the pioneers in IOL implantation and modern radial keratotomy. Dr. Fyodorov also was an innovator in other areas, including phakic IOLs. He died in a helicopter accident last year.

Also honored was Cornelius Binkhorst, MD, a Dutch ophthalmologist who helped develop the IOL.

David Cogan, MD, was the son of an ophthalmologist and also was inducted into the Hall of Fame. Dr. Cogan served as director of Harvard's Howe Library. He also was director of neuro-ophthalmology at the National Eye Institute.

Hermann von Helmoltz, MD, also was inducted. Dr. Helmholtz is known for his doctrine of the conservation of energy, and also for inventing the ophthalmoscope. Dr. Helmholtz authored the book Physiological Optics.

Gerd Meyer-Schwickerath was also named to the Hall of Fame. He was director of the University Eye Clinic in Essen, Germany, for 25 years. Prof. Meyer-Schwickerath's invention of photocoagulation helped in the treatment of retinal and macular disorders.
