First meaningful use payment received for ophthalmic EHR system
CHARLOTTE, N.C. The Eye Center of Central PA is the first ophthalmic practice to receive reimbursement under the meaningful use guidelines for proper usage of electronic health records, according to a press release from Medflow.
Under the HITECH Act, medical practices can receive $44,000 per provider for using EHRs if they meet the federal guidelines for meaningful use. However, surveys have estimated that only 20% of ophthalmic practices have implemented EHRs into their practices, the release said.
Federal guidelines will require medical offices to have EHR systems in place by 2014, and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services will reduce reimbursements by 6% in 2015 to penalize those that fail to adopt an EHR system.
The Medflow EHR System is designed to work with existing scheduling and billing software, as well as with diagnostic devices used in a typical ophthalmic practice, the release said. The company will continue to expand in order to assist customers in achieving meaningful use.
