PARIS — Going Blind, a documentary by a glaucoma patient losing his vision, was screened at the World Glaucoma Congress.

The 1 hour 21 minute film, released in 2010, tells the story of Joseph Lovett, a former producer of ABC News’ 20/20, who has lost partial vision in his left eye from glaucoma.

The film also explores other eye diseases including age-related macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy. People living with these conditions discuss their daily lives as they deal with a wide spectrum of visual loss.

After the screening, Mr. Lovett said that he hopes to raise awareness about visual loss with the film. He encouraged physicians to watch it for a direct view into the patient perspective.

“People don’t know anything about vision. They don’t know how they see. They don’t know what they are at risk for. They don’t know what their future is. They don’t know what you guys do,” Mr. Lovett told the physicians who attended the screening.

“It’s something we all avoid,” he said. “We want people to be aware of it, just as they are about cancer, AIDS or Alzheimer’s. All of these diseases have come out of the closet. It’s time that eye diseases came out of the closet.”
