BUDAPEST, Hungary — The IntraCor femtosecond laser procedure is showing good, stable results in the correction of presbyopia, according to one surgeon involved in a multicenter study in Germany.

The technique provides flapless intrastromal correction using the Femtec femtosecond laser (Technolas Perfect Vision) to reshape the cornea without affecting the surface.

"The refractive power of the cornea is locally changed, leading to significantly improved near vision and good intermediate vision, without affecting distance vision," Mark Tomalla, MD, said at the winter meeting of the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons.

In a group of 21 patients, an average gain of six lines was reported for near vision, while distance vision improved by an average of two lines. There were no reports of loss of lines.

No loss of contrast sensitivity was reported, and Dr. Tomalla said his patients were "highly satisfied with the procedure."

In April 2009, the IntraCor procedure received the CE mark for presbyopia and low hyperopia correction.

"We will soon start with new studies on myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism," Dr. Tomalla said.
