FDA approves Focus Night & Day lenses as ‘corneal bandage’
ATLANTA Focus Night & Day contact lenses have received Food and Drug Administration approval for therapeutic use.
According to CIBA Vision, manufacturer of the lens, the lenses supply up to six times more oxygen to the eye than ordinary contact lenses. With the approval, the lenses can be used as a bandage to protect the cornea and relieve corneal pain in the treatment of acute or chronic ocular pathologies and following eye surgery.
With the additional approval, CIBA Vision expects plano versions of the lens to be available in the United States during the second half of this year. A company press release noted that because of the lens high oxygen transmission, the currently available powered lenses (available in +6 D to 10 D in two base curves) can also be used in therapeutic applications when vision correction is needed.
