FDA approves AcrySof Toric IOL

FORT WORTH, Texas — A toric IOL for use in cataract patients with existing astigmatism has been granted U.S. regulatory approval, according to the manufacturer.

Alcon’s AcrySof Toric IOL is based on the original AcrySof design, the company said in a press release announcing the Food and Drug Administration approval of the lens.

“Approval of the AcrySof Toric IOL is an important addition to our AcrySof IOL product portfolio and further demonstrates our commitment to helping cataract surgeons achieve the best possible outcomes for their patients,” said Robert J. Stevens, vice president of surgical products research and development for Alcon.

The company intends to launch the AcrySof Toric IOL in conjunction with the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery meeting in March 2006. Alcon said it was continuing to pursue approval of a blue-light absorbing chromophore to incorporate into the AcrySof Toric lens.
