KYOTO, Japan — Polyunsaturated fatty acids may be related to the onset of age-related macular degeneration, according to a study.

Masayuki Ouchi and colleagues here at the Kyoto Prefectural University of Medicine compared fatty acid fractions within the red blood cell membrane and plasma of 10 healthy people and 11 patients with age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Two types of acids exhibited significantly higher values in the AMD patients than in the control group. Red blood cell levels of palmitic, palmitoleic, oleic and linoleic acids, however, showed significantly higher levels in the control group compared with the AMD group.

The study is published in Ophthalmologica.
