'Father of modern corneal science' receives AAO Laureate Recognition Award
NEW ORLEANS The American Academy of Ophthalmology awarded the 2007 Laureate Recognition Award to Claes H. Dohlman, MD, PhD, at the opening session of the AAO's annual meeting here.
"For his seminal contributions to ophthalmology, the academy is proud to present its Laureate Award to a legend in his time and the father of modern corneal science," said Paul R. Lichter, MD, who presented the award.
Dr. Dohlman is widely known for his contributions to keratoplasty and keratoprosthesis.
"When the board of trustees selected Dr. Claes Dohlman to receive the academy's highest honor, it had no shortage of accomplishments and contributions to make his selection compelling," said Dr. Lichter.
"The Boston Keratoprosthesis has helped to restore sight to many exceedingly grateful patients," he said.
Most recently, Dr. Dohlman served as chairman of Harvard University's Department of Ophthalmology and chief of ophthalmology at Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary. He retired from these positions in 1989, but continues to work full-time as a professor of ophthalmology.
"Dr. Dohlman has trained more than 200 fellows around the world and they revere him," said Dr. Lichter.
In addition, a new Harvard Medical School professorship was recently named in honor of Dr. Dohlman, Dr. Lichter noted.
