Glaucoma patients with a family history of glaucoma are more likely to have atherosclerosis or a history of migraine headaches compared with patients with no family history of glaucoma, according to a study.

In a population of 2,062 individuals with open-angle glaucoma identified in the Glaucoma Inheritance Study in Tasmania, 1,012 were found to have a known relative also affected by open-angle glaucoma, and 688 had no known or identifiable relative with the disorder.

Individuals with a familial history of open-angle glaucoma were more likely to also have a medical history of migraines (odds ratio = 1.67) and atherosclerosis (odds ratio = 1.42).

"No significant difference in the prevalence of hypertension, Raynaud's phenomenon, diabetes mellitus or thyroid disease was identified," the study authors wrote.
