Older patients, and those who had flatter preoperative corneal curvatures or who underwent enhancement surgery, were more likely to be dissatisfied with their vision after LASIK, researchers reported.

Melissa Bailey, OD, MS, and colleagues at Ohio State University and elsewhere sought to examine the preop risk factors associated with decreased satisfaction and unwanted vision symptoms after LASIK.

They sent questionnaires to LASIK patients and received responses from 604 patients who underwent myopic LASIK at least 6 months before receiving the questionnaire.

Overall, 97% of the subjects would recommend LASIK. Among those who would not, a significantly larger percentage reported that they experienced glare, halos or starbursts. Those with flatter preoperative corneal curvature values were less likely to recommend the procedure. Increasing age was significantly associated with dissatisfaction as well. Patients who required surgical enhancement were more likely to report glare, halo and starbursts.

The study is published in the July issue of Ophthalmology.
