Performing phacoemulsification on eyes with existing glaucoma filters improves vision without increasing the need for glaucoma medication, according to a single-center study.
Bradford Shingleton, MD, and colleagues at Ophthalmic Consultants of Boston analyzed 58 eyes that underwent temporal phacoemulsification either through a clear corneal (32 eyes) or scleral tunnel (26 eyes) approach after filtration surgery. Minimum follow-up was 12 months.
The mean preoperative intraocular pressure was 11.8 mm Hg, and mean final IOP was 13.7 mm Hg. No statistically significant change in glaucoma medication requirements was noted between the two phaco groups. No intraoperative complications were noted. A small but statistically significant increase in IOP was seen.
The study is published in the June issue of Journal of Cataract & Refractive Surgery.
