SAN FRANCISCO — EyeCare America has launched a new volunteering initiative for retired ophthalmologists to help the public service organization prevent avoidable blindness.

By becoming a spokesperson for EyeCare America, retired ophthalmologists can add their names to the program's existing database of volunteers to be contacted in the event that a volunteering opportunity arises in their community, according to a press release announcing the initiative.

Volunteers may be called upon to speak with local media and community groups or to distribute promotional materials about eye health issues and EyeCare America's programs. In addition, EyeCare America encourages retired ophthalmologists to contact local media and community groups on their own to spread the word about the organization's free eye exam programs.
