A standard for objective assessment of resident’s skills in intraocular surgery has been designed by a panel at the Harvard Medical School and the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary.

The goal of Sandra Lora Cremers, MD, and colleagues was to establish an evaluation protocol to assess residents’ surgical competency and improve their surgical outcomes. Their efforts resulted in the development of a one-page evaluation form called the Objective Assessment of Skills in Intraocular Surgery, or OASIS.

The team that designed the form consisted of eight experts in resident education, two chief residents and resident representatives from postgraduate years 2, 3 and 4. The team analyzed all resident cataract surgeries performed from July 2001 to July 2003, and the one-page form was developed to assess residents’ skills. A panel of surgeons at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary reviewed the database and the evaluation form and provided feedback, the authors said.

“OASIS has face and content validity and can be used to assess, objectively, surgical events and surgical skill,” the study authors said. “We believe the OASIS evaluation form and database will be a valuable tool for assessing ophthalmology residents’ surgical skills at other residency programs as well.”

The paper is published in the July issue of Ophthalmology.
