Esterman binocular scoring may not be appropriate for amblyopia assessment
A newly adopted standard for rating visual field disability may not properly reflect the binocular disability caused by amblyopia, a group of Turkish researchers suggest.
Acun Gezer, MD, and colleagues at Istanbul University subjected 24 people with amblyopia and 10 without amblyopia to ocular and orthoptic examinations. Visual acuity was measured using a Snellen letter chart. The Esterman binocular visual field test was performed on all individuals.
The mean Esterman score was 84.67 for people with amblyopia and 99.6 for people without amblyopia (P = .032). Among the people with amblyopia a correlation was not found between the visual acuity of the worse eye and the Esterman score. The angle of deviation and the Esterman score also were not correlated.
The study is published in the March/April issue of Journal of Pediatric Ophthalmology & Strabismus.
