Eradication of ocular tumors possible through focused irradiation, early results show
BOSTON A single laser treatment may be effective in eliminating pigmented choroidal melanomas, results of an animal study have found.
Matthias Krause, MD, and colleagues at Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary used a single laser treatment at 125 J/cm2 to eradicate 10 of 11 experimental tumors in rabbits. The researchers noted eradication remained at about 75% when the joule rate was reduced to between 63 and 87. The eradication rate dropped to 25%, however, when the irradiation was reduced to 38 J/cm2 or less (P < .001).
The results will be incorporated into a preclinical trial for Provectus, the lasers manufacturer. The study is published in the March issue of Archives of Ophthalmology.
