Epi-LASIK found 'guilty' in mock trial

LAS VEGAS — The Honorable Jack T. Holladay, MD, MSEE, FACS, presided over a "trial" of epi-LASIK held during Refractive Surgery Subspecialty Day preceding the American Academy of Ophthalmology meeting. The procedure was found "guilty" because, in the words of juror Ronald R. Krueger, MD, its "claim of improvement in visual recovery, pain and haze has not been significantly shown, compared to other surface ablation techniques."

By a show of hands, most of the audience agreed with the panel of six jurors. In defense of the procedure, its inventor, Ioannis Pallikaris, MD, said epi-LASIK is relatively young in comparison to LASIK, which was described in 1989, and more time is needed to evaluate the advanced surface ablation procedure's long-term results.
