Endophthalmitis associated with liver abscess, study confirms

Klebsiella pneumoniae infection stemming from liver abscess was the major source of endogenous endophthalmitis among patients in Taiwan, a retrospective study found.

Yung-Jen Chen, MD, and colleagues reviewed the records of all cases of endogenous endophthalmitis treated at a single hospital in Taiwan between 1992 and 2002.

The study included 86 eyes of 74 patients. The organism that was the major cause of the infection — K. pneumoniae — did not change throughout the 10 year period, the study authors said. Additionally, liver abscess was consistently found to be the major source of the infection.

The authors noted that their results confirm other analogous studies in East Asian patients.

The study is published in Retina.
