Encapsulated cysts associated with an elevated IOP are fairly common after Ahmed glaucoma valve implant insertion, according to a study. However, surgically excising the cysts is effective for lowering IOP if medical therapy is ineffective, the study authors added.

Maya Eibschitz-Tsimhoni, MD, and colleagues retrospectively reviewed the charts of 57 patients who underwent Ahmed glaucoma valve implant insertion; all patients were followed for at least 12 months after surgery.

Of the 57 patients, 13 developed an encapsulated cyst. Of those, 11 failed medical therapy and needling and had to undergo surgical excision to control IOP. After a mean excision time of 330 days, eight of the 11 patients had adequate IOP control.

The study is published in the August issue of Journal of Glaucoma.
