New elliptical instruments can be used to perform astigmatic excimer laser subepithelial ablation, according to an international group of surgeons.

Chris Lohmann, MD, PhD, and colleagues in Germany, England and the United States reported on the use of the new instruments in 34 astigmatic eyes. The set of instruments for excimer laser subepithelial ablation (ELSA) consists of an elliptical microtrephine with a 70 µm calibrated blade and an elliptical alcohol cone. Cylindrical correction was between 1 D and 3.5 D, and spherical correction ranged from –0.75 D to –8.75 D. All eyes were followed for 6 months.

At last follow-up, mean spherical correction was –0.04 D, and mean cylindrical correction was 0.27 D. The mean index of success was 0.18.

The study is published in the November issue of Journal of Cataract & Refractive Surgery. For additional information on the ELSA technique, see the January issue of Ocular Surgery News Europe/Asia-Pacific Edition.
