SAN DIEGO — Ellex announced the commercial availability of a new B-scan mode for the company's diagnostic ultrasound system at the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery meeting here.

The Eye Cubed ultrasound system now offers a 40-MHz ultrasound biomicroscopy mode that produces high-resolution images of the anterior chamber. According to a company press release, the improved image quality will allow practitioners to expand their diagnostic skills for premium IOL sizing and evaluating accomodative IOLs inside the eye.

The ultrasound biomicroscopy mode is especially helpful for acquiring detailed images of the cornea, iris and crystalline lens, according to the release.

"It is just an amazing piece of equipment," Cynthia Kendall, BMET, RDMS, ROUB, vice president of clinical applications at Ellex, said in an interview with OCULAR SURGERY NEWS. "With our understanding of ultrasound physics, we realized sulcus-to-sulcus measurements were not dependent on velocity of sound but on the design of the probe. The axial resolution of this system gives us a 100% accurate measurement."
