Eduardo C. Alfonso, MD, to head Bascom Palmer Eye Institute

MIAMI — Eduardo C. Alfonso, MD, has been named interim chairman of Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, according to a Bascom Palmer press release. His appointment begins today, the release said.

In addition to his role as chairman, Dr. Alfonso, an Ocular Surgery News Cornea/External Disease Section Member, will serve as director of Bascom Palmer's Anne Bates Leach Eye Hospital in Miami and as director of Bascom Palmer's outpatient facilities in Palm Beach Gardens, Plantation and Naples, Fla.

Dr. Alfonso succeeds Carmen A. Puliafito, MD, MBA, Ocular Surgery News Retina/Vitreous Section Editor, who served as Bascom Palmer's chairman for the past 6 years.

Dr. Puliafito has been appointed dean of the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles. He also begins his new position today.

Dr. Alfonso is an Edward W.D. Norton Professor of Ophthalmology who specializes in corneal surgery, corneal disease and ocular microbiology. He is a 1984 graduate of Bascom Palmer Eye Institute's ophthalmology residency program and has been on the Bascom Palmer faculty since 1986. He has also been serving as medical director of Bascom Palmer's Ocular Microbiology Laboratory, the release said.
