NICE, France — Pars plana vitrectomy and IOL exchange, when performed soon after initial IOL dislocation, has a high success and safety rate, according to a study presented here.

“All patients in our study underwent pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) soon after or during IOL implantation and dislocation, or as a late complication following capsulotomy,” said Kamiar Mireskandari, MD, of Moorfields Eye Hospital, here at the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons meeting. “We then performed IOL exchange and had very positive results.”

Dr. Mireskandari reviewed the charts of 30 patients who underwent complicated cataract surgery leading to PPV and IOL exchange.

“We found that an early intervention with PPV led to a large success rate in safety and visual acuity,” Dr. Mireskandari said. For a safe outcome after PPV, in 24% of cases, the exchange IOL had to be placed in the anterior chamber rather than the posterior chamber.

Best corrected visual acuity of 6/12 or better was achieved in 60% of the cases, Dr. Mireskandari said.
