Performing early lens extraction and treating with intracameral antibiotics can control infection and yield good visual outcomes in eyes that develop intralenticular abscesses, according to a small case series.
Amjad Salman, MS, and colleagues at Joseph Eye Hospital in Tiruchirapalli, India, reviewed records for eight eyes of eight patients that developed such infections after a traumatic ocular injury. In five eyes, investigators cultured gram-positive cocci from lens aspirate, with Staphylococcus epidermidis most commonly isolated.
In all cases, surgeons performed extracapsular cataract extraction and administered intracameral antibiotics either with or without pars plana vitrectomy.
"Cataract extraction resulted in control of the infection in all eyes, and seven eyes (87.5%) had a favorable visual outcome," the authors said.
The study is published in the April issue of Clinical & Experimental Ophthalmology.
