SAN FRANCISCO — First results with a bifocal, aberration correcting multifocal IOL show a lens with good predictability that delivers good vision at near and distance.

According to Mark Tomalla, MD, the difference between target and actual refraction achieved with the Acri.Lisa (Carl Zeiss Meditec) IOL was a mean spherical equivalent of 0.11 ± 0.54. Postoperative distance best corrected visual acuity at 8 weeks in 58 eyes of 29 patients was 0.11 ± 0.78 logMAR, and improvement from 0.34 ± 0.24 logMAR from baseline. Postoperative near best corrected visual acuity was 0.20 ± 0.09 logMAR.

There results contributed to high patient satisfaction (93%) in the study, Dr. Tomalla said at the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery meeting here. There was also a high level of spectacle independence, 93%, including 22 patients who never needed glasses, 25 who did not need glasses for distance vision and 24 who did not need glasses for near vision.
