Early age, microcornea main risk factors for glaucoma after IOL implantation in children

PARIS — Age of IOL implantation and microcornea are significant risk factors for children in developing pseudophakic glaucoma after initial cataract surgery, said Rupal Trivedi, MD, here at the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons meeting.

Dr. Trivedi and colleagues performed a database search of 228 eyes of 162 children who underwent cataract surgery with IOL implantation. Nine eyes of seven patients were diagnosed with glaucoma.

Dr. Trivedi found that eight of 44 eyes (18.2%) operated on at 6 months of age or younger developed glaucoma while only one of 184 eyes operated on after 6 months of age developed glaucoma. Seven of the nine eyes diagnosed with glaucoma had microcornea (corneal diameter less than 10 mm).

“If you are implanting at an early age, you will need to give lifelong follow-up,” Dr. Trivedi said.
