Earlier treatment may improve visual prognosis for eyes with zone 1 ROP

Zone 1 retinopathy of prematurity has a poor anatomical and visual prognosis, according to a retrospective study. Earlier treatment might improve the infants’ visual outcome, the study authors suggest.

Michael O’Keefe and colleagues analyzed the records of 24 eyes of 12 infants with zone 1 retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). All infants were treated with diode laser between 1992 and 2002.

Ten of the 12 infants had an unfavorable outcome. Those with successful anatomical outcomes were treated before threshold disease occurred. All the patients showed developmental delay or neurological disability.

The study is published in Acta Ophthalmologica Scandinavica.
