Dynamic MRA system shows potential for treating patients with orbital vascular lesions

A new form of dynamic magnetic resonance angiography shows potential for improving the evaluation and treatment of patients with complex orbital tumors, according to a small retrospective study.
Alon Kahana, MD, PhD, and colleagues evaluated the clinical benefit from using Time-Resolved Imaging of Contrast KineticS (TRICKS, GE Healthcare) for imaging orbital vascular tumors in five patients. Of these patients, one patient had a cavernous hemangioma, two patients had orbital varices, one patient had an orbitocutaneous arteroivenous malformation and one patient had a fibrous tumor with features of a hemangiopericytoma, according to the study.
The researchers reported that TRICKS MRA altered the diagnoses of two patients. Additionally, one patient who had an orbital lesion in the ophthalmic artery was followed perioperatively using the imaging modality, which "added substantial value in the care of these patients," the authors wrote.
The study is published in the December edition of Archives of Ophthalmology.
