BUDAPEST, Hungary — A study using subjective and objective testing methods showed that the Visiogen Synchrony IOL from Abbott Medical Optics maintains accommodation over time.

"We have been testing stability of accommodation over a 3-year period in a small group of five eyes," Eduardo Marques, MD, said at the winter meeting of the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons.

Ultrasound biomicroscopy was used to measure the position of front and back optics and compare between cycloplegic and near state, and the iTrace (Tracey Technologies) wavefront measurements were also taken at cycloplegic and near to create refractive maps of the average measurements. At the same time, subjective accommodating amplitude was studied by visual acuity testing.

"These subjective and objective techniques can demonstrate the mechanism of accommodation and stability of performance of the dual optic lens," Dr. Marques said. "At all time points of the study, up to 3 years following cataract surgery, an accommodative benefit of 3 D of push-on amplitude and 20/20 or better distance corrected near visual acuity could be seen in these patients."
