ORLANDO, Fla. — There is huge potential in the dry AMD market, according to a speaker here.

"It's an area I think is going to explode," David Guyer, MD, said at the Ophthalmology Innovation Summit preceding the annual meeting of the American Academy of Ophthalmology.

Thirteen million patients with dry age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and potential for $10 billion is the market that Dr. Guyer anticipates.

"Dry [AMD] is the new wet [AMD]," Dr. Guyer said, suggesting that progress in treating dry AMD could take a similar path to the progress that has been made to treat wet AMD over the past decade.

"We went from a disease where we were using thermal laser and most people were going blind, and now over the past 10 to 12 years, a third of patients gain 3 or more lines of vision. A truly amazing breakthrough for patients," he said.

For dry AMD, Dr. Guyer said that research has finally gotten to a level where "exciting" clinical trials will get underway soon.
