SAN FRANCISCO — Roger F. Steinert, MD, was awarded the grand prize in the ASCRS Film Festival for his video, “Dr. Zernike’s view of the world.”

Dr. Steinert, of Boston, was honored with the award here during the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery meeting.

Winners in other categories included:

Cataract/Implant Surgery: first place: “New generation of capsular tension ring,” by Christophe Chassain, MD, of France; runner-up: “Biocompatibility of poloxamer hydrogel as a fluid-type IOL,” by Ji Won Kwon, MD, of South Korea.

Cataract Complications: first place: Explantation of opaque IOLs,” by Miguel A. Padilha, MD, of Brazil; runner-up: “The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Capsular Tension Ring,” by Isabel M. Prieto, MD, of Portugal.

Refractive Complications: first place: “Management of recurrent epithelial ingrowth after LASIK with fibrin glue,” by David R. Hardten, MD, of Minneapolis; runner-up: “Artisan-Myopia Claw IOL explantation and consequent cataract surgery,” by Milan G. Izak, MD, of Slovak Republic.

In-House Productions: first place: “Impossible is possible: Artisan implantation – a rare complication,” by Michael Blumenthal, MD, of Israel; runner-up: HIPAA for Ophthalmic Dummies,” by Marc J. Safran, MD, of Liverpool, N.Y.

Instruments/Devices: first place: “Intelligent tubing,” by Graham D. Barrett, MD, of Australia; runner-up: “Capsular hemi-ring: The next step in effective management of profound zonular dialysis,” by Ike K. Ahmed, MD, of Canada.

Intraocular Lenses: first place: “Long-term performance of the Sarfarazi EAIOL in a monkey eye,” by F. Mona Sarfarazi, MD, of Carlsbad, Calif.; runner-up: “Ultimate small incision IOL,” by Nick Mamalis, MD, of Salt Lake City.

New Techniques: first place: “The Lord of the (Capsular Tension) Rings,” by Jaime Zacharias, MD, of Chile; runner-up: “Radiofrequency: expanding applications,” by Fernando C. Trindade, MD, of Brazil.

Quality Teaching: first place: “Everything we need to know about post-LASIK infections," by Marcelo Sterzovsky, MD, of Argentina; runner-up: “The Wave,” by William J. Fishkind, MD, of Tucson, Ariz.

Refractive Surgery: first place: “Eye movement and laser tracking systems: The myth uncovered,” by Kerry D. Solomon, MD, of Charleston, S.C.; runner-up: “Plume evacuator for LASIK and PRK,” by Matthew Niemeyer, MD, of Loma Linda, Calif.

Special Interest: first place: “Handycam digital movies of the eye,” by Ramesh Dorairajan, MD, of India; runner-up: “Visual axis preservation after pediatric cataract surgery,” by Wan-Soo Kim, MD, of Korea.
