Antibiotic treatment with doxycyclin in patients with MALT lymphoma – a form of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma – seems ineffective, according to a study.

The results contrast with other studies that have suggested that Chlamydia plays a role in the development of ocular adnexal lymphoma, the study authors said.

B. Grünberger and colleagues at the Medical University Vienna in Austria retrospectively reviewed the charts of 11 patients with MALT lymphoma of the ocular adnexa who were given doxycyclin 200 mg daily over the course of 3 weeks. The median follow-up was 9 months.

None of the patients responded to the “blind” antibiotic treatment with doxycyclin. One patient with bilateral conjunctival lymphoma improved on a subjective basis, but was referred to alternative therapy after progression and worsening symptoms after 6 months.

The study is published in the Annals of Oncology.
