MADISON, Wis. Diplopia can manifest after refractive surgery, but close attention to risk stratification and screening criteria can help minimize the possibility, according to a study.
Burton J. Kushner, MD, and Lionel Kowal, FRANZCO, retrospectively reviewed the charts of patients who developed persistent diplopia after refractive surgery. All patients were seen in two private strabismus practices.
A total of 28 patients were identified and the cause of the diplopia narrowed to one in five mechanisms. Of the five causes, prior need of prisms, aniseikonia, iatrogenic monovision and improper control of accommodation in patients with strabismus could have been prevented by use of proper screening techniques. The fifth cause was technical problems.
The study is published in the March issue of Archives of Ophthalmology.
