Dignity phacoemulsifier nearing clinical trials
During a presentation discussing new phaco technology at Hawaii 2004: the Royal Hawaiian Eye Meeting, I. Howard Fine, MD, described a new phaco machine that has received 510(k) clearance will enter U.S. clinical evaluations shortly.
Dr. Fine said the Dignity phacoemulsifier, being developed by Phacor, has two touch screen monitors, two remote controls, “simple and logical programming” and motorized height adjustment, and it operates in multiple languages.
The Dignity is “from the brains behind the innovations of the OMS Diplomax,” which is now the Advanced Medical Optics Diplomax, according to program materials distributed during the conference.
The Dignity, according to the meeting materials, also has dual-linear phaco, dual-linear irrigation and aspiration, true trilinear phaco, true trilinear vitrectomy, advanced fluidics and a programmable foot pedal.
Dr. Fine said the new machine is being developed in the United States by Richard Thorlakson, MD, and B.J. Barwick Jr., and in Japan by Mamoru Takeuchi.
