Depth of presentation in periocular hemangioma may be important clinical indicator

J AAPOS. 2009;13(6):567-570.

Hemangioma presenting deeper in the eye may be prone to more prolonged growth periods than superficial or strawberry nevi hemangioma in pediatric patients.

According to a study of 42 infants with periocular hemangiomas with a mean follow-up of 24 months, more prolonged growth was noted in patients with deeper hemangiomas (ie, subcutaneous or orbital presentation) compared to patients with strawberry nevi.

In the study, periocular hemangiomas with a deep component also tended to have a later onset compared to strawberry nevi.

According to the study, depth of a presenting hemangioma may, therefore, be a predictor of the rapidity of resolution of the tumor. As a result, measuring the depth of the presentation may be important for assessing prognosis and planning treatment.
