MADRID, Spain — Radiation chorioretinopathy, a complication of radiation therapy for retinal maculopathy, can be prevented through proper administration of treatment and patient follow-up, said a surgeon speaking here.

The prevention of radiation chorioretinopathy depends on frequency of radiation, dosage and patient selection. Edoardo Midena, MD, of Italy, listed criteria to prevent onset of the treatment complication during the Congress of the European Society of Ophthalmology.

Avoid unnecessary radiation therapy, avoid higher radiation doses, application in high-risk infants and delayed treatment, he said. A higher dose of radiation does not increase effectiveness. He recommended use in local combined therapy. Surgeons should also treat patients diagnosed with maculopathy immediately and check them for irridated eyes, he said.
