Deferoxamine may prevent degenerative changes in optic nerve

ADANA, Turkey Systematic deferoxamine treatment is effective in preventing degenerative changes in retrobulbar hematoma, according to an animal study.
Aysel Pelit, MD, and colleagues here examined 12 rabbits, three of which were used as the control group. The remaining nine rabbits were divided into three groups of three: Group 1 had bilateral retrobulbar hematoma induced; Group 2 had bilateral retrobulbar hematoma induced and were given systemic deferoxamine; Group 3 was given only deferoxamine.
At day 21, all of the rabbits underwent bilateral enucleation, and their optic nerves were examined by light and electron microscopy. Rabbits that were given systemic deferoxamine manifested no significant degenerative changes to their optic nerves.
The study is published in the February issue of Clinical & Experimental Ophthalmology.
