Cyclosporine-reinforced autologous serum drops show promise in treating tear film dysfunction

BASSANO DEL GRAPPA, ITALY — Autologous serum drops reinforced by cyclosporine showed increased efficacy as a treatment for tear film dysfunction, a study found.

"We treated the patients with systemic cyclosporine previous to the preparation of the autologous serum. This procedure resulted in a 0.05% concentration of cyclosporine in the drops," Simonetta Morselli, MD, said at an ophthalmology meeting organized at the San Bassiano Hospital here.

The study compared the results obtained from one group of patients treated with cyclosporine-reinforced autologous serum and another group treated with autologous serum drops alone.

"The positive effects of topical cyclosporine on the autoimmune inflammatory component of tear film dysfunction showed up very clearly in the study. The group treated with cyclosporine-reinforced drops had a much faster re-epithelialization within 10 days," Dr. Morselli said.
