Cyclosporine, re-wetting drops show similar efficacy in contact lens wearers with dry eye

Cyclosporine 0.05% ophthalmic emulsion appears as effective as re-wetting eye drops for treating dry eyes in patients who wear contact lenses, according to a study by researchers in Alabama.
This may be attributable to the small sample size. It is also possible that the mechanism of the dry eye state in contact lens wearers may be different from that of other dry eye states and thus make cyclosporine 0.05% ophthalmic emulsion an ineffective treatment, the study authors said.
Carol E. Rosenstiel, OD, and colleagues at the University of Alabama in Birmingham randomly assigned contact lens wearers with dry eyes to treatment with either Restasis (cyclosporine ophthalmic emulsion 0.05%, Allergan) or re-wetting drops (Refresh Tears, Allergan). Both were administered twice daily over 3 months follow-up, according to the study.
For all parameters, including objective findings and subjective reporting of symptoms, there was no statistically significant difference between the treatment and placebo groups, the authors said.
The study is published in the January edition of Eye & Contact Lens.
