MAUI, Hawaii — The Custom Laser Corneal Reshaping system from CustomVis Medical may provide better customized ablation results than standard LASIK systems, according to a surgeon speaking here at Hawaii 2003: the Royal Hawaiian Eye Meeting.

“The system is easy to use, reliable and efficient because there is less heat,” said Donald R. Sanders, MD, PhD. “The energy levels are constant, there is an excellent beam profile, and there are no dangerous gases.”

Topography, wavefront and ablation information must coincide on the cornea for best patient results, Dr. Sanders said. The laser’s tracking system follows a fixed point on the limbus rather than a moving one such as a point on the iris or pupil. The laser also allows preoperative registration of the eye tracker, wavefront and topography images.

According to Dr. Sanders, the laser’s small (0.6-mm) spot will allow high-resolution corrections. He also said the laser’s 300-Hz pulse rate will shorten procedures, decreasing the risks associated with corneal drying.

The laser is currently in trials in the United States.
