Customized tailor-made optic technology promising for astigmatic correction

ISTANBUL, Turkey — A new toric IOL provides customized astigmatic correction and optimal quality of vision, but stability needs to be improved, according to a study presented here.

Pierre-Jean Pisella, MD, discussed the Lentis Tplus LU-313-T (Oculentis) at the winter meeting of the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons.

"This IOL is tailor-made to suit individual corneal irregularities, based on preoperative topography," Dr. Pisella said.

Customized manufacturing leads to unequalled precision and visual quality but requires exact positioning and perfect stability in the eye.

"There is still some rotation of the lens that we need to control better. Mean rotation in our case series was 4.4º, resulting in increased coma aberration," Dr. Pisella said.

The study included 13 eyes of eight patients who underwent senile cataract through a small, 1.8-mm incision. The Lentis LU-313-T IOL was implanted to compensate for preoperative corneal astigmatism. Mean refractive cylinder improved from -1.89 D preop to -0.47 D postop. Visual quality was good.
