Custom contact lenses in development for patients with unusual corneas
Customized contact lenses for patients who have unusually shaped corneas are in development at the University of Rochester Eye Institute, according to a press release from the university.
Geunyoung Yoon, PhD, will enroll 30 patients with either a previous corneal transplant or keratoconus in a study of the customized lenses, the school said. After measurements of the eye are taken, Dr. Yoon will “sculpt a soft contact lens for the patient, tailored precisely to counter the patient’s unique optical aberration,” the release said.
The concept of measuring optical aberrations in the eye using adaptive optics was developed at Rochester by David R. Williams, PhD, and others. Dr. Yoon will use these same principles in the development of the customized lenses, according to the release.
Bausch & Lomb will provide the prototype lenses, according to the school.
