ABU DHABI — Rigid gas permeable contact lenses effectively improve visual acuity and quality of vision after corneal collagen cross-linking in patients with keratoconus, according to one speaker here.

"There are several options to enhance vision after [corneal cross-linking], such as [intracorneal rings], phakic IOLs and excimer laser procedures. However, they often don't provide the quality of vision that the patient desires," Jenny Deva, MD, said at the World Ophthalmology Congress.

"It is wonderful to show these patients that a much cheaper optical device is capable of making them regain functional vision and see as well as normal people," Dr. Deva said.

Dr. Deva has been using RGP contact lenses in combination with cross-linking in the last 5 years.

"Cross-linking has been a miracle for keratoconus patients, and together with something as simple as these lenses, we can help patients effectively and see some of them overwhelmed with joy," she said.

"You don't need customization in at least 90% of the patients," Dr. Deva said. "Cross-linking not only reduces the required refractive power, but also makes the lens sit better on the eye. If the patient is very uncomfortable, you can use a soft bandage contact lens and then place the rigid lens on top."
