'Corneal template' to standardize NearVision CK procedure
SAN DIEGO The OptiPoint corneal template aims to bring a new level of consistency and accuracy to NearVision conductive keratoplasty, a procedure that has previously relied heavily upon the individual skill level of surgeons.
Refractec, the company that markets NearVision CK, unveiled the template during the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery meeting here.
Prior to the release of the template, surgeons who performed NearVision CK had to manually control centration, pressure and the entry angle of the Keratoplast tip. The corneal template a suction ring that is placed atop the cornea regulates these variables with crosshair-guided centration and spot placement holes.
"By using the new OptiPoint corneal template, I've been able to achieve a new level of confidence and consistency to the procedure," H.L. Rick Milne, MD, said in a press release from Refractec.
The OptiPoint corneal template has received 510(K) pre-market clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and will launch in late May, a Refractec representative said. A full U.S. rollout is expected by the American Academy of Ophthalmology annual meeting in November.
