KYOTO, Japan Topically administered latanoprost does not affect the corneal epithelial barrier function, according to a small study.
Takeshi Ishibashi and colleagues at Kyoto Prefectural University of Medicine conducted the study, in which 24 patients with glaucoma were randomized into two groups. Ten patients had had no previous topical antiglaucoma medication use, and 14 were already using topical antiglaucoma medication. The first group received topical latanoprost for 30 days, and the second group added latanoprost to their medical regime for 180 days.
The mean fluorescein uptake in the monotherapy group was 54.6 ng/ml before treatment and 57.1 ng/ml 30 days after treatment. In the combination therapy group, mean uptake changed from 101 ng/ml before treatment to 119 ng/ml at 30 days and 93 ng/ml at 180 days after treatment.
The study is published in Ophthalmologica.
