Combining phaco, vitrectomy effective macular hole treatment
HAYWARD, Calif. Combined phacoemulsification/IOL surgery and pars plana vitrectomy can successfully treat macular holes, results of a small study show.
Researchers here studied 89 consecutive patients with macular hole who underwent combined phaco, insertion of posterior chamber IOL, posterior capsulectomy and pars plana vitrectomy. Eighty patients (89%) had their holes closed with the combined surgery. Four of the nine patients whose holes failed to close had the holes closed with one additional procedure. Of the 89 patients, 61 (65%) had vision of 20/40 or better.
The study is published in the August issue of British Journal of Ophthalmology.
