Combined stent implantation, phaco significantly lower IOP in single-incision surgery
SAN FRANCISCO An ab interno device can be implanted through the same temporal clear corneal incision used in phacoemulsification, resulting in lower IOP and reduced glaucoma medication use with an easy implantation, a clinician said here.
"The reduction of pressure and medication from the iStent is greater than IOP reductions previously reported for cataract surgery alone," Thomas Samuelson, MD, said at the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery meeting.
Dr. Samuelson presented 24-month results from a European multicenter prospective study of the iStent trabecular micro-bypass stent (Glaukos). The device was implanted in 59 open-angle glaucoma patients with co-existing cataract who had clear corneal incision phaco, followed by implantation of the device through the same temporal incision.
At 24 months, patients had a significant mean reduction in IOP of 5.1 mm Hg and were using a mean 1.1 fewer medications.
The iStent is not approved for use in the United States. It is currently undergoing U.S. clinical trials as an adjunct to cataract surgery, Dr. Samuelson said.
